Anton Chuvakin’s Ideas Are Just Bad!

July 25th, 2008 Bill Teeple No comments

Let me preface my blog by stating that I am a Systems Administrator and have been for the past 15 years. I take great pride in my work, my integrity and my honor.

To read Anton Chuvakin’s blog entry about the misguided deeds of Terry Childs and then tell all of corporate America that the same will befall us all in time if we don’t start instituting checks and balances against Sys Admins is like Chicken Little saying the sky is falling.

The ideas expressed on his blog leads the casual reader to infer that their businesses are in danger of being hijacked by disgruntled Sys Admins and that isn’t the case. Terry was, obviously, a truly manic person who over time seized control of an entire I.T. organization. HOW could this happen. Simple!

The ineffective leadership of the City of San Francisco with regards to their Information Technology. I have worked for companies that had very strict and secure Sarbanes Oxley requirements and a series of checks and balances so that one person could not hold all the keys to the kingdom, with the exception of the Director of Information Technology.

But people should not run scared, fearing for their data. Yes – we should be monitored and watched. We should have policies in place restricting us from certain behaviours, but these restrictions and security need to be addressed on a business by business model.

It doesn’t make sense in my case as I am the only Sys Admin in my company as they are still in start-up mode and growing. Who will watch me? Who has the ability to watch me. This is where good interviewing and background checks verify the stability and mental health of your employees and allow you to instill trust within your new hire.

I fully expect, every day, that if my boss wants to know what it is I am doing, that he will have full and complete access. Working like this, I know that I can be proud of what I do, daily. Not only for the sheer accomplishment of the task, but also for the integrity and honesty I put into my work.

I despise people like Terry Childs, but despise Chicken Little’s like Anton Chuvakin even more.

My two cents, my blog.

HOPKINS – Incredible stories that make me think …

July 23rd, 2008 Bill Teeple No comments

I think the documentary on ABC called HOPKINS is an excellent series that de-mystifies the life and abilities of Doctors. They are humans performing superhuman abilities in keeping our bodies and our lives together.

I just watched an episode with a 2 year old who received a heart transplant and it makes me thank GOD that my children are healthy so far. It is truly amazing how we all take life for granted. The simple ability of walking or talking. In a second I could be gone, snatched from families lives leaving a gaping hole in their existence.

We are all only hear, but for a quick second and before we know it, we are done and buried. Let us all try to leave mother earth and our families better than when we started.

May God bless us all.

I AM FAT!

July 10th, 2008 Bill Teeple No comments

Yes, I know that isn’t a ‘real’ statement.  All my friends who know me and see me say I look as good as ever, but the truth is more disturbing than what is hidden by my 2XL sized t-shirts.

The fact of the matter is this.  For the first time in my 36 years on this planet, I have crossed into the 200 lb. mark.  I am 6’2" and 200 lbs.  Not too bad.  But consider this.

For the first 25 years of my life I have been no more than 160 lbs.  Which means in the past 11 years, I have gained 40 lbs.  OK… I can see myself growing to 185 lbs.  In fact, at my last Dr. Appointment in September 2007, I was rated at 187 lbs.  Now, some 10 months later, I am now 200 lbs.  I asked my Dr., "Is it normal for a person to gain 13 lbs. in a 10 month span?".  I was amazed to discover that he didn’t think it was an issue.

Well, dammit, I consider it a huge friggin’ issue (literally and emotively).  That is what is wrong with our society.  A Dr. who is there to look at my physical well being doesn’t say anything to raise red flags or warrant any concern.  What are we becoming – a future of FAT people that our medical profession now supports and condones.

ONE WORD = BULLSHIT!

If I had shown up and instead of GAINING 13 lbs. I had LOST the 13 lbs. and I was weighing in at 174 lbs., I am sure the Dr. would be like, "Losing 13 lbs in 10 months when you didn’t want to is a great concern, let’s run some tests to see if you have anything out of the ordinary".

No, we have just become complacent with our weight issues.

Well, I am now watching my calorie intake, eating salads, and attempting to get more physical excercise throughout the day.  My lifestyle has changed for the WORST in the past 12 months and it is time to take charge and fix my physical issues – be a man and own up to my problems.

EXACTLY WHAT AMERICA NEEDS TO DO!

My blog, my two cents.
